MTTU WORRIED OVER HIGH SPATE OF ACCIDENTS-ASP Alexander Obeng (3rd left), head of Research, Education/ Training of MTTU in a group photo with the participants and their organizers


Nine hundred and twenty eight persons lost their lives in motor accidents in the country between January and May, 2012 as against 165, in 2011, during the same period.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng , Head of Research, Education and Training  of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU), of the Ghana police services disclosed this  at a two day  training workshop for drivers yesterday  in Accra.
He said he was saddened about the increase in road accidents in the country in spite of all the education and efforts being put in place to address the situation.
ASP Obeng however, attributed the high number of knocked down victims to failure of drivers to adhere to traffic regulations such as 50 kilometers per hour in towns and villages.
He said the MTTU would continue to educate drivers and have instituted a number of measures, including research on road safety to check accidents, especially in accident prone areas in the country.
The two day training program was organized by Grace Multimedia Services in conjunction with the Motor, Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Services for drivers from Superlock Technologies Limited (STL), an ICT services company in Accra.
The skills and safe driving program was on the Theme: “Drive Safe, Alert today, Alive Tomorrow”
 Speaking at the ceremony to open the two day training programm, ASP Obeng said, despites the challenges the facing the MTTU, the driver enhancement and skills oriented training was yielding positive results as some of the accidents attributed human errors have significantly reduced.
He therefore challenged the participants to make good use of the opportunity offered and ensure that they acquired the necessary skills and apply same on the road to reduce the number of accident the country is witnessing in recent time.
ASP Obeng cautioned that any driver found to have flouted traffic regulations which includes overtaking unnecessarily or reckless driving after the training would have his certificate or license invoked.
Miss Nana Yaa Konadu, the CEO of Grace Multimedia Services said, the program was aimed at reducing the level of illiteracy among drivers to make them aware of the importance of their work so more live could be safe on the road.
According to her more such programmes would be organized throughout the country in all the regions and the districts capitals.
She said, the organization had already organized similar programmes for driver in the corporate and the commercial sector and would extend same to all drivers to reduce the carnages on our roads.
Mr. Solomon Nii Lamptey, Transport Manager of STL, said, the  program was timely  because, the company uses much resources in vehicles maintenance and believe at the end of the training the drivers would  have had acquired skills that would help reduce some of the avoidable accidents involving vehicles.
 He expressed the delight of the opportunity given to the company and assured that management would ensure that, the drivers comply with the regulations given to them during the training.
The participants numbering 40 were drivers from the Superlock Technologies Limited in Accra.
