Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah, the Acting President of the Dominion University
College (DUC), a private University set up by the Action Chapel International Church, has said the University is poised to be the
pace setter of the production of quality and competent graduates in the country
by the next three years.
The University, he said was established not to compete with already
existing universities in the country, but to set the pace for morally and ethically
competent graduates whom institutions and organization would be well please to
work with.
At the maiden edition of governing council and media meeting
yesterday in Accra, Dr. Spio-Gabrah noted that, the University ultimate aim was
to redefine educational policy in the country by production quality graduates
to meet the needs of industries and commence.
According to him, the university when fully put into
function, would engage in modern technique of teaching and learning methods
that would not only attract students in the country, but also from other parts
of the world.
‘ I am optimistic that, by the time this university is fully
taking places, more students, especially from other countries in and outside the Africa continent would be
admitted, and this could only be possible if we are able to position this
university to stand the best of its vision and mission,” he told the council.
The Dominion University College which is currently at the premises of the Action Chapel
International, was established in
2010/2011 and accredited by the National Accreditation Board(NAB) and is also affiliated to the Cape Cost University .
It has since begun receiving application from suitable
applicants into the various degree and Diploma programs for the 2012/2013
academic year.
According to Dr. Spio-Gabrah, the University has since
received about 57 applicants who want to read various courses of their choice
and expecting that by the end of July, more people would have been applied.
He told members of the governing council that, plans are far
advanced and lectures halls, offices and other academic facilities are
temporally made available for the smooth take off of the University by
September this year.
Touching on the number of teaching staff expected for the
university, Dr. Spio-Gabrah disclosed that, so many competent and professional
lectures drawn from both public and private universities in the country have approached the DUC for opportunity to be
part of the teaching staff.
He said for the purpose of political or victimization reasons
the names of those professor s would be remain anonymity from the public for now
till the right time.
He also informed the governing council that a Library, as well as a 40 -seated Computer Laboratory, has been made available for both teaching and
students for research work, stressing that the facilities would be expanded
when funds are made available and urged the council to make a commitment to see
the success of the university.
He said the University needs GHC50Million to be able to build
its permanent campus on a piece of land acquired at Oyibi, near Dodowa, in Accra, and urged governing council members to find ways by which the funds could
be raise to start the project.
Dr. Spio-Gabrah, who is also the Chief Executive officer (CEO)
of the Action Chapel International, had earlier inaugurated a press corps for
the University and the church as a whole, with the aim of fostering cordial relation between the media in their
reportage on activities of the university.
He therefore urged the media to also crosscheck information
about either the University or the Church on issues before publishing them.
However, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan William, the chancellor
of the University also disclosed that, three universities at the United State
of America (USA) have agreed for an affiliation and that students from the
Dominion University College (DUC) would have opportunity of going to those
university for courses to improve their knowledge.
He said, measures are also put in place to ensure that,
students who pass out from DUC are not found rooming for jobs but would rather
be call by industries and organization base on the skills and competency they would acquired .
The government council was chaired by Miss Sarah Fafa Kpodo,
a member of the governing council on behalf of the chairman, Dr. Emil Francis
Short, who was on an equally important assignment outside the country.
