SPIO EXPLAINS DUC MISSION, SAYS IT POISED TO BE THE PACE SETTER OF QUALITY EDUCATION

Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah, the Acting President of the Dominion University College (DUC), a private University set up  by the Action Chapel International Church,  has said the University is poised to be the pace setter of the production of quality and competent graduates in the country by the next three years.
The University, he said was established not to compete with already existing universities in the country, but to set the pace for morally and ethically competent graduates whom institutions and organization would be well please to work with.
At the maiden edition of governing council and media meeting yesterday in Accra, Dr. Spio-Gabrah noted that, the University ultimate aim was to redefine educational policy in the country by production quality graduates to meet the needs of industries and commence.
According to him, the university when fully put into function, would engage in modern technique of teaching and learning methods that would not only attract students in the country, but also from other parts of the world.
‘ I am optimistic that, by the time this university is fully taking places, more students, especially from other countries  in and outside the Africa continent would be admitted, and this could only be possible if we are able to position this university to stand the best of its vision and mission,” he told the council.
The Dominion University College  which is currently  at the premises of the Action Chapel International, was established  in 2010/2011 and accredited by the National Accreditation Board(NAB) and  is also  affiliated to the Cape Cost University .
It has since begun receiving application from suitable applicants into the various degree and Diploma programs for the 2012/2013 academic year.
According to Dr. Spio-Gabrah, the University has since received about 57 applicants who want to read various courses of their choice and expecting that by the end of July, more people would have been applied.
He told members of the governing council that, plans are far advanced and lectures halls, offices and other academic facilities are temporally made available for the smooth take off of the University by September this year.
Touching on the number of teaching staff expected for the university, Dr. Spio-Gabrah disclosed that, so many competent and professional lectures drawn from both public and private universities in the country  have approached the DUC for opportunity to be part of the teaching staff.
He said for the purpose of political or victimization reasons the names of those professor s would be remain anonymity from the public for now till the right time.
He also informed the governing council that a Library,  as well as a 40 -seated  Computer Laboratory,  has been made available for both teaching and students for research work, stressing that the facilities would be expanded when funds are made available and urged the council to make a commitment to see the success of the university.
He said the University needs GHC50Million to be able to build its  permanent campus  on a piece of land acquired at Oyibi,  near Dodowa,  in Accra, and urged governing council  members to find ways by which the funds could be raise to start the project.
Dr. Spio-Gabrah, who is also the Chief Executive officer (CEO) of the Action Chapel International, had earlier inaugurated a press corps for the University and the church as a whole, with the aim of fostering  cordial relation between the media in their reportage on activities of the university.
He therefore urged the media to also crosscheck information about either the University or the Church on issues before publishing them.
However, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan William, the chancellor of the University also disclosed that, three universities at the United State of America (USA) have agreed for an affiliation and that students from the Dominion University College (DUC) would have opportunity of going to those university for courses to improve their knowledge.
He said, measures are also put in place to ensure that, students who pass out from DUC are not found rooming for jobs but would rather be call by industries and organization base on the skills and competency  they would acquired .
The government council was chaired by Miss Sarah Fafa Kpodo, a member of the governing council on behalf of the chairman, Dr. Emil Francis Short, who was on an equally important assignment outside the country.
