Ghana must regulate fuel exportation to save lives - ACEP

Deputy Executive Director of Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Benjamin Boakye, has said authorities in charge of checking fuel exported to Ghana must regulate the sector to save lives.
According to him, an investigation report has revealed that the fuel imported into Ghana mainly diesel is seriously toxic sometimes to the extent it is over 2000 times worse than the standards accepted in the EU and the USA.
The toxic fuel has been linked with several respiratory illnesses and car malfunctioning.
He said “If we want to save the environment and the danger this poses to our health then as quickly as possible we need to all jump in and make sure that there is a regulation."
Speaking to press in Accra on a recent World Bank report which indicated that air pollution kills about 17,500 people annually in Ghana, Mr Boakye said is alarming enough to call for concerns.
“We can’t wait for that to exacerbate and the trend clearly shows that in the next 10-15 years the traffic situation in our cities is going to quadruple and that would have a serious implication on our health if we continue to use the kind of products that come on our market,” he said.
He added that Ghana is getting close to what Beijing has in terms of air pollution where people have to wear a mask to breath clean air.
He further pointed that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi's contention that Ghana is providing 500-ppm fuel as a matter of cost is contestable because Kenya is currently doing 50-ppm and they are selling it cheaper than Ghana is.

Investors seeking to explore and apply for mineral rights and concession in Ghana can do so online beginning next year, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, has announced.
For the first time in the history of Ghana, a fully-fledged computerized mining cadastral system is being developed for the country under a bilateral agreement with the Australian government.
Addressing the press at the Meet-the-Press series in Accra, the Minister said: “When completed, the system will ensure effectiveness, accountability and compliance in the management of mineral rights to boost investment. It is expected that from 2017, investors can apply for mineral rights online.”
Under this new system, information relating to existing concessions as well as status of new applications (payments made, concession validity, size, location etc.) can be assessed and tracked online.
It is expected that by April 2017, investors can conduct full cartographic searches and apply online for mineral rights.
The implementation of a Mining Cadastral System in Ghana is expected to help prevent disputes over concession boundaries and significantly reduce human interventions in the mineral rights acquisition and management process.
At the same time, it will help improve collaboration and interaction between relevant government institutions like the Minerals Commission, Ghana Revenue Authority, and Bank of Ghana, among others.
The Minerals Commission has officially launched the online repository for public access where all data recorded in the Mining Cadastral pertaining to mineral rights and related revenues are published.
Dr. Toni Aubynn, CEO of the commission said in August that “we are excited that what we set out to achieve is turning out positively with the development of a fully-fledged Mining Cadastral Administration System”.

NDC National Deputy Women Organiser Message on International Mother Language Day
Feburary 21, 2016
Dr Catherine Deynu, NDC Deputy Women Organiser
International Mother Language Day celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity alongside multilingualism as a force for peace and sustainable development.
As we work towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while mapping out a post-2016 national elections in Ghana, this diversity can encourage dialogue, mutual understanding, unity and peace in our country.
This in turn can help us build more just and inclusive societies. As the late President Nelson Mandela once said, "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart".
The theme for this year’s observances is “Quality education, language(s) of instruction and learning outcomes.”
This underlines the importance of mother languages for quality education and linguistic diversity, to take forward the changing lives and transforming Ghana Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Mother languages in a multilingual approach are essential components of quality education, which in itself is the foundation for empowering women and men and their societies, especially the situation in Ghana.
Additionally, the theme spotlights the vital role of education and the local languages in advancing culture and science . This will help ensure that the latest scientific knowledge is more widely shared. At the same time, it will help deepen and enrich our national knowledge base with more traditional but often overlooked scientific wisdom.
As the day is being marked with quality education, language of instruction and learning, I seize this opportunity to call on all Ghanaians to stand up for free but quality education being propagated by the government.
I also urge all parents and guardians to enrol their wards into formal education to learn not only the English language but our diverse local dialects so they could become the future leaders to move this nation’s development agenda forward.
