Five young men who posed as military officers and had
been giving security protection to event organizers for fees in different parts
of the country were on last Friday arrested by the Kaneshie District police in
Accra.
The Suspects, who are currently at the police cells
assisting investigating, are Michael Osei Mantey, 21, Cadet Instructor, Alex
Tawurah, 25, Tailor, Wonders Hoyenfia,
28, Mason, David Opoku , 25, Electrician and Samuel Osei Menu , 27.Cadet Instructor.
Their accomplices George Kofi Kumi, 32, a video
Editor &Graphic Designer and Silasi Antwi , 23, an Graphic
apprentices, are alleged to be those produces the fake military Identification Cards (ID
Cards) for the suspects are also in
police cells.
They are alleged to engage in various nefarious activities
and also providing security protection to people at all kinds of functions as
military officers for fees.
Briefing the media in his office, the Kaneshie
District police Commander, Chief Superintendent Fleance Senam Adikah , said on
Monday June 10, 2013 at about 2:30pm, suspect Michael Osei Mantey, who claimed
to be a Cadet Instructor, went to Kasoa for his illegal activities and boarded
a commercial bus back to Accra.
According to the police commander, when the bus of
which Mantey was on got to the Kaneshie first traffic light, a taxi-cab crashed
into the side of the bus but the driver failed to stop.
He said the bus finally stopped under the Kaneshie Footbridge
and Mantey who was on the bus got down and confronted the taxi driver for
careless driving, but was he challenged by a passenger in the taxi cab.
C/Supt Adikah stated that, following that suspect Mantey
who was in military uniform then called some police men near by to assist him
to arrest the passenger on the allegation that he had assaulted him.
He told the media that the passenger was brought to
the police station together with suspect Mantey and a medical form was issued
to him (Mantey) to attend clinic and comeback for his statement to be taken.
Mantey , according to the police commander, left the
police station in the company of Alex Tawurah to the clinic and
later came back to the police station for his statement to be taken.
He said when Mantey returned he was handed over to
an investigator for his statement to be taking and it was during that time the
investigator notice from the demeanor of Mantey that he was not a full military
officer.
The Kaneshie police commander said based on the
suspicious behavior, Mantey was further questioned of his profession and he
confessed that he was not a trained military officer and also mentioned the
other four as his accomplices.
He said while
Mantey was been questioned, a taxi driver brought an ID card that two military officer hired him for
services and left the ID Card in his car
and when the police check , it was Tawurah name and picture on it.
He said, suspect Mantey later led police to arrest Tawurah, Hoyenfia, Opoku and Menu and the two accomplices, Kumu and Antwi at various locations in Accra, including, Abeka, Mallam, Gbawe and New Fadam.
C/Supt Adikah added that, during interrogation, all suspects
confessed to the offence of impersonation and claimed that they were cadet
Instructors and only go round to Basic and Senior High Schools (SHS) to train them
for some fee.
Upon search at the various locations of the suspects
the police retrieved assorted military items uniforms from them.
He said after investigation the suspect would be
charge for the specific offences and send to the law court for prosecution.
The Kaneshie District Commander however advised the
general public to report to the police whenever they suspect activities of any
persons claimed to be any security officer in their community.
He also advised ICT and other technology experts to
desist from assisting people to fake security particulars for fee, saying if
any ICT expert is found in faking state security uniforms and artilleries he or
she would be severely dealt with according to the law.
The suspects, he said would be send to the law court
for prosecution after investigation s are completed.
