The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has donated a quantity of assorted food and drinks items as well as toiletries worth GH¢5,000.00 to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital at a ceremony in Accra.

The items include 10 bags of rice, 10 gallons of cooking oil, 10 cartons of toiletries and bales of used clothing.

The donation ceremony was on the theme: "Putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged in society.’’

Mr. George E. Gyamfi-Osew, Director in charge of Special Projects at NLA said the donation formed part of the authority corporate social responsibility to put smile on the face of the needy in society.
According to him,  the Authority as part of its corporate social responsibility identified the Psychiatric Hospitals in Ghana as one of the health facilities with little attention that also lacked resources as a result of the stigma attached to mentally challenged persons in society.

He noted that the government had been the sole source of funding to the hospital and that funds received to feed, clothe and buy medicine were always inadequate, hence as a corporate body the NLA deemed it useful to donate in support  of the hospital.

He said the donation was in line with the NLA’s motto of developing the nation through games hence the donation.

He lauded the role of the staff and the warmth they had extended to the patients at the hospital over the years.

Mr. Alex Kissi, the Administrator of the Hospital who received the items commended the NLA for their kind gesture and appealed to other organizations to emulate the NLA and assist the Hospital with items for the upkeep of the mental patients.
The Pantang Psychiatric Hospital which is under the Ghana Health Service as government health institution was commissioned in 1975 to decongest the Accra Psychiatric hospital.

The Hospital has nine wards comprising three Female and six male, and a bed capacity of 500 but accommodates 450 patients.

It also hosts a nursing training school, producing Registered Mental Nurses and a vast land with a number of uncompleted wards, bungalows and junior staff accommodation facilities abandoned.

The NLA in similar ceremony presented GHCC10, 000.00 to College of Health Science at the Korle-bu Teching Hospital in Accra.

The presentation, according to Mr. George Gyemfi-Osew was in fulfillment of a pledge the Authority made to the college to always support the facility and has been supporting it for the past three years.

The NLA director of Special Projects noted that the presentation was made towards the education of the country medical professionals of the facility so they could deliver to the needs of the people especially those who need their services most.
He underscored the need for educational support for quality health care and noted that NLA has made medical educational as one of its major supporting project in sustaining the country health care.
